Chicago and New York can argue all they want, but for some folks, the best ‘za comes doughy, crusty, and in a square. While it’s currently delivery only, a lot of people in Bangkok have been waiting for this one: somewhere to get Detroit-style pizza.
Opening around two months ago, Crusty Club, based out of Ekkamai, comes from the crew behind the likes of Roast, Ocken and Monty's Bagel. They’re doing Detroit-style pizza served not just in square format, but in cute little delivery sleeves of four slices—and, trust us, four slices will do ya.
For those unfamiliar, Detroit-style pizza is known for its thick, airy dough, crusty cheese around the edges, and square cut. And, one thing Crusty Club gets properly right about Detroit-style pizza is putting the insides outside (something that has been missing with the Detroit pizza pretenders); for example, your garden variety pepperoni comes with a hefty helping of sauce on top and below your cheese and pepperoni.
No, it’s not going to be winning any awards for its adherence to strict Italian pizza dogma, but it’s a type of pizza Bangkok has been missing.
In addition to the usual specs—the pepperoni, Hawaiian, BBQ chicken—you’ll find a few rarer options here like a salmon pizza, clam and butter, and a truffle and mushroom. The orders of four slices, their large, come in a pleasant little sleeve you can pull out and eat straight from the bag. And, as everyone knows, the corner squares are the best squares, so why not have four?
While they do offer a larger size, it’s a whopping six square, so make sure you order that one to share. Another thing about Detroit-style pizza is the dipping, and they get this right too, with a little honey or ranch to slather on your squares.
Now, they’re lacking some sides, and frankly their soggy wings need some work, but their cheesecakes—including basque, brownie, lemon meringue, and tiramisu—are worth your time.
While sometimes offered by Pizzamania in Bangkok, Detroit has been wildly underrepresented on the city’s pizza scene. We’ve got Chicago-style at Capone’s, countless homegrown and foreign-born New York-style pizza spots, and some of the best Italian pizzas in the world. But, this is the first spot to see Detroit-style done properly, available online for delivery only.
