Across three days from July 4-6, the historic—but decidedly creepy—Maen Sri Waterworks building will be home to a horror movie festival sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Thailand Creative Culture Agency.
The free-entry event will hold outdoor screenings as well as haunted house sections inspired by the movies themselves, food stalls, music, and stories from filmmakers.
The showing will include three English-language films and three Thai-language films as well as a short film competition.
Showtimes have not yet been released, but the English-language films include Ouija, the 2014 film with Olivia Cooke, and the internationally acclaimed horror film from Jordan Peele, Us. Smile, which boasted its sequel last year, will be showing as well.
On the Thai language side, viewers will find the 2014 The Sisters from Tiwa Moeithaisong, as well as the vengeful ghosts of 2008’s Coming Soon. Lastly, there’s the photo-centric Shutter, which won the Best Asian Film award at the 2005 Fantasia Film Festival in Vancouver.
Each day, the horror festival will be available from 6pm-midnight, and all screenings are free to the public.
Supported by the Department of Cultural Promotion and THACCA, this first ever horror movie fest was organized by Wizard Production, Bison Idea, Bangkok Open Air, Thai Film Directors Association, and Documentary Club.
This isn’t the only time outdoor movie screenings have captured the city’s imagination. The third outdoor film festival from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) in collaboration with the Thai Film Director Association at the start of the year drew big crowds.
